Teeth whitening is a dental procedure that can restore the natural tooth color. Teeth darken with age and can become stained due to foods, tobacco and beverages such as coffee, red wine and tea. Whitening gel works through the peroxide oxidizing agent that penetrates the porosities in the enamel and breaks down the stain deposits in the dentin.
Teeth whitening may not be recommended for everyone. People who suffer from receding gums, gum disease, tooth sensitivity or cavities that haven’t been treated, could experience additional tooth sensitivity when the whitening gel comes into contact with decay or the exposed dentin. You will also need a consult to determine if you are a candidate depending on the condition and shade of your teeth.
There are two main whitening systems in a dental office. The in office whitening system and the the take home system. The in office system may produce immediate results however the effects do not last and you will need to return for more visits for more treatments which adds up the cost. At Clinique Dentaire Regency, we recommend the take home system because it produces nice results as well but they last longer and you can do the touch ups yourself at 6 month or one year intervals depending on your need. The advantage of take home is that it costs less, uses less harsh product and lasts longer. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and create custom trays that will fit over your teeth.
Then, you will have to add a small quantity of whitening gel in the trays and wear them daily for a minimum of half an hour to an hour over a period of 2 weeks to get best results.
